DUI School

DUI SchoolAs part of your DUI (driving under the influence) sentence, you may be required to attend DUI School. This school, referred to as a risk reduction program, is designed to educate drunk-driving offenders on the dangers of driving while intoxicated. While you may be sentenced to DUI School after a conviction, it may also be mandatory as part of your plea deal.

Depending on your state, successful completion of DUI School may reduce your other penalties or keep points from being added to your driver’s license. The program requirements differ based on the DUI school and the circumstances of your case. If you are a habitual offender, you may be required to attend additional DUI classes.

Many DUI School classes consist of a pre-assessment, classroom time, and a post-evaluation.  While some classes may be completed via mail or the Internet, other classes are held in person. These classes highlight the effects of alcohol and/or drugs on the body. Alcohol and drug use and addiction are also discussed in class in an effort to deter students from drinking and abusing alcohol. Some DUI Schools take their students to hospitals or morgues. They may also show photographs or video of drunk-driving accidents in order to demonstrate the potential consequences of drinking and driving. The goal of these classes is to prevent students from becoming repeat DUI offenders.

Before taking classes at a DUI School, it is important to check with the court to determine whether the school has been approved. While your state’s DMV is responsible for licensing and monitoring DUI Schools, they may not determine the school’s fees and class schedules.

If your license has been suspended or revoked, you may need to look for a DUI School near your home. Some schools offer flexible schedules, including night and weekend classes to fit into your lifestyle.

The cost of attending DUI School must be paid out of pocket by you. The tuition amount depends on the school that you attend as well as the circumstances involved in your drunk-driving class. DUI School may consist of one long all-day class or several half-day classes. While most states require at least 12 hours of course time, it depends on the factors of the case and the jurisdiction.
